About Home Assistant

Home Assistant is a home automation hub you run on your own hardware. It finds devices on your network and pulls lights, sensors, thermostats, media players, energy meters and more from over a thousand brands into one system, then lets you build automations, dashboards and energy reports on top. Its voice assistant, Assist, can run locally, and official companion apps for iOS and Android add remote control, notifications and presence detection. Processing and data stay at home by default. You can install it on a Raspberry Pi or other single-board computer, an x86 PC, a virtual machine or a Docker container, or buy the ready-made Home Assistant Green hub. The software is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence and is owned by the non-profit Open Home Foundation. An optional paid Home Assistant Cloud subscription from partner Nabu Casa adds easy remote access, Alexa and Google Assistant links and cloud speech engines. It rewards tinkering; people who want a plug-and-play app may prefer Homey.

Best for: Tinkerers who want local, private control of devices from many brands in one place.
