About openHAB

openHAB is an open-source home automation platform that connects devices and services from many vendors and runs automations on hardware you own. Its add-on architecture supports more than 400 technologies and systems and thousands of devices, and its rule engine handles time- and event-based triggers, scripts, notifications and voice control. It runs on Linux, macOS, Windows, Raspberry Pi, Docker and NAS devices such as Synology, and there's a ready-made openHABian image for the Raspberry Pi. Apps for web, iOS and Android give you control from anywhere. It works without any cloud service, but an optional cloud connector (free through myopenhab.org, or self-hosted) links it with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit. openHAB is written in Java on Apache Karaf, free and open source under the Eclipse Public License, and backed by the non-profit openHAB Foundation rather than a company. It suits technical users who want a flexible, vendor-neutral system and don't mind configuration work.

Best for: Technical users who want a vendor-neutral, fully local smart home server.
