About Internet Information Services (IIS)

Internet Information Services (IIS) is Microsoft's web server for Windows. It ships as an optional role in Windows Server, with a lighter version in desktop Windows for development, and is the traditional home for ASP.NET and other .NET web applications, though it can also run PHP. Sites are managed through IIS Manager, PowerShell cmdlets or configuration files, and features are added as modules: URL Rewrite, Application Request Routing for reverse proxying and load balancing, compression, CORS and Web Deploy for publishing. It supports HTTP/2, request isolation through application pools, and central management of web farms. IIS itself costs nothing extra, but it only runs on Windows, so production use means Windows Server licences. It suits organisations already invested in Microsoft's stack; teams on Linux or containers usually pick nginx, Apache or Caddy instead, which have larger communities and more tutorials.

Best for: Organisations hosting ASP.NET and .NET Framework apps on Windows Server.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Built into Windows Server at no extra cost
  • First-class support for ASP.NET and .NET apps
  • GUI management plus PowerShell for automation
  • Official modules for URL rewriting and reverse proxying

Why people leave

  • Windows only, so production needs Windows Server licences
  • Closed source with a smaller community than nginx or Apache
  • Official site and modules see infrequent updates
