About Novelcrafter
Novelcrafter is a writing environment for long fiction built around a Codex, a story bible that tracks characters, locations and lore and automatically feeds the relevant entries to the AI when you write a scene. It has outlining, scene beats, series and shared universes, review tools and a chat for working through the manuscript. The key difference from Sudowrite is that you can bring your own AI: connect OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Mistral accounts, use OpenRouter for hundreds of models, or run local models through LM Studio or Ollama. That gives control over cost, model choice and privacy, at the price of some setup. The cheapest plan has no AI at all, Hobbyist adds bring-your-own-key AI, and Artisan and above add chat and advanced review features. There is no free plan, but a 21-day trial unlocks everything. It runs in the browser and suits writers willing to learn a fairly detailed tool.
Best for: Novelists who want deep story organisation and their own choice of AI model.
