About Procreate
Procreate is a drawing and painting app made exclusively for iPad by the Australian company Savage Interactive. Designed around touch and Apple Pencil, it pairs a minimal interface with a fast painting engine, more than 300 built-in brushes that can be customised in Brush Studio, layers and blend modes, selection and transform tools, drawing guides, text, animation assist and a time-lapse replay of every artwork. Illustrators, concept artists, letterers and hobbyists use it for everything from sketches to finished commissions, and a huge community sells brushes and tutorials. The company has publicly committed to staying subscription-free and avoiding generative AI. It is iPad-only, so files must be moved to a desktop app for print layout, vector work or heavy photo editing, and it is not designed for UI design. Procreate is a one-time purchase from the App Store; a separate Procreate Pocket app covers iPhone and Procreate Dreams handles animation.
Best for: Illustrators and hobby artists who draw on iPad with Apple Pencil.
