About Spacedrive
Spacedrive is an open-source file manager written in Rust that tries to treat all your storage as one library. It indexes folders on your computers, external drives and cloud accounts, recognises the same file wherever it lives, and lets you search, tag and group everything from one window. Libraries sync directly between paired devices over a peer-to-peer connection, so there is no central server holding your index, and cloud services such as S3, Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox are browsed alongside local disks. The project is in the middle of a ground-up rewrite: version 2 is an alpha for macOS and Linux, with Windows and mobile apps still to come, so it suits tinkerers more than people who need a dependable daily file browser. The code is free under the Apache 2.0 licence. The company's homepage also previews a separate native Mac app sold as a one-time purchase, which is a different product from the open-source project.
Best for: People with files spread over several computers, drives and clouds who want one searchable index.
Pros and cons
What works
- Indexes local disks and cloud storage together in one library
- Peer-to-peer device sync with no central server
- Free and open source under Apache 2.0
- Detects duplicate content across devices
Why people leave
- Version 2 is still an alpha release
- No Windows build of version 2 yet, and no mobile apps
- Far heavier than a plain file browser if you only use one computer
