About Supermodel

Supermodel is a free, open-source emulator that focuses on a single piece of hardware: Sega's Model 3 arcade board, which ran late-1990s games such as Virtua Fighter 3, Scud Race and Daytona USA 2. Because the project targets only that board, its developers have reverse engineered its 3D hardware in depth, and it is the usual pick for these games, since general-purpose arcade emulators have historically handled Model 3 poorly. It uses OpenGL and SDL2, supports network play over low-latency connections for linked-cabinet titles, and is mostly driven from the command line and a config file rather than a game-browsing interface, so many people launch it from a front end. You supply your own ROM sets. The team lost its old website, so official builds for Windows, macOS and Linux are now published automatically on GitHub, with Discord used for support. It is released under the GPL and costs nothing.

Best for: Arcade fans who want to play Sega Model 3 games like Virtua Fighter 3 and Scud Race on a PC.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Plays Model 3 games far better than general-purpose emulators
  • Network play for linked-cabinet racing games

  • Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux

Why people leave

  • Covers only one arcade platform
  • No built-in game browser; setup leans on config files and the command line
  • Old website is gone, so documentation is scattered
