About Tenacity
Tenacity is a free, open-source audio editor forked from Audacity in 2021, after Muse Group's takeover of Audacity raised concerns over proposed telemetry and a new privacy policy. It keeps Audacity's familiar feature set, multitrack recording and editing, effects, plugin support and wide format support, while being developed by a volunteer community with no company ownership. Since the fork, the projects have diverged: Tenacity has merged other Audacity forks, modernised parts of the codebase and build system, and avoids Audacity's cloud features, while Audacity has moved faster on new features and a redesigned interface. Development is hosted on Codeberg, with a GitHub mirror. It suits people who want an Audacity-style editor without links to a commercial owner, especially on Linux, where it is packaged by many distributions. The trade-offs are slower releases, fewer users and less documentation than Audacity, and features that can lag behind it. It runs on Linux, Windows and macOS.
Best for: Audacity users who prefer a community-run editor with no corporate owner.
