About Tungsten Power PDF

Power PDF has changed names several times, from Nuance to Kofax to Tungsten Automation, but the product is the same idea: a full PDF editor sold as a one-time purchase instead of a subscription. It creates and edits PDFs, converts to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint with good fidelity, runs OCR on scans, builds and fills forms, redacts sensitive content, removes metadata and adds e-signatures. The interface is styled after Microsoft Office. Standard covers home and small business needs; Advanced adds features like redaction, Bates numbering and integrations with document management systems such as SharePoint and iManage; Business adds deployment options for larger organisations. The Windows app is the main product, with a Mac version and mobile apps for reading and annotating. Updates are less frequent than subscription rivals, and the renaming has caused some confusion, but for buyers who want to own their software it is a credible Acrobat replacement.

Best for: Small businesses and home users who want an Acrobat-class editor without a subscription.
