About Typst

Typst is a typesetting system for papers, theses, reports and other documents that need precise layout, designed as an easier alternative to LaTeX. Its markup is lighter, styling and scripting live in one consistent language, and compiling is fast enough that the preview updates almost as you type. Error messages are also far more readable than LaTeX's. The compiler is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence and runs from the command line on Windows, macOS and Linux. The company behind it also runs a collaborative web app with real-time co-editing, a template and package library called Typst Universe, and import from LaTeX, Word and Markdown. The web app has a free tier, and paid plans add comments, more storage, Git sync and reference-manager integration. The main limitation is ecosystem: many journals still expect LaTeX submissions, and there are fewer templates and packages than LaTeX has built up over decades.

Best for: Writers who want LaTeX-quality documents with simpler syntax and instant previews.
