About Yucata

Yucata is one of the oldest board game sites on the web, online for more than 25 years and still run by volunteers as a non-commercial project. It hosts 200+ games, mostly European-style strategy games, with the rules handled by the site. The defining feature is pace: games are turn-based, so each player moves when they have time, during a coffee break, in the evening or at the weekend, and you can keep many games going at once. Live play is possible when everyone is online, but nobody is penalised for being slow. Close to 20 games also have a solo mode for practice. Everything is free, with no subscriptions, no premium tier, no ads and, the team says, no tracking or analysis of user data; voluntary donations cover the running costs. A free account is needed to play. The interface looks dated next to commercial sites, and the catalog leans toward older titles, with roughly one new game added each month, but for players who value calm, slow games and a respectful community it is hard to beat.

Best for: Strategy gamers who prefer slow, turn-based games and a free, ad-free site.
