A free, open-source photography workflow app and RAW developer with a lighttable and darkroom.

Open source

The short answer

Lightroom and darktable both pair a photo library with a non-destructive RAW developer. Lightroom is the more polished, beginner-friendly option, with cloud sync and built-in AI tools, but it is subscription only. darktable is free and open source, stores edits in XMP sidecar files rather than a locked catalogue, and gives very fine technical control, at the cost of a steep learning curve and unfamiliar defaults.

Adobe Lightroom or darktable: our take

The two follow a similar shape. Lightroom organises imports with ratings, keywords and collections, then develops them with sliders, AI masking for subject and sky, Generative Remove, Denoise and Super Resolution. darktable splits work into a lighttable for importing, rating and tagging and a darkroom for development, with map, tethering and slideshow views alongside. Its scene-referred pipeline, with modules such as filmic and sigmoid tone mapping, color calibration and parametric and drawn masks, offers more control than most people need, and you can stack many instances of a module. That flexibility makes the interface feel cluttered to newcomers and its defaults unfamiliar to anyone coming from Adobe.

Data ownership is the clearest difference. Lightroom keeps edits in its catalogue, which makes switching away harder, and editing is no longer fully available if you cancel the subscription. darktable writes edits to XMP sidecar files next to your images, so there is no proprietary lock-in. Lightroom is a Creative Cloud membership with a 7-day trial, 1TB of cloud storage and Lightroom Classic included. darktable is free under GPL-3.0 and built by volunteers.

Platforms differ too. Lightroom runs on Windows, macOS, the web, iOS and Android, with a free mobile app. darktable runs on Linux, Windows and macOS, but only on Apple silicon Macs running macOS 13.5 or later, and has no mobile app. Choose Lightroom if you want quick results, sync across phone and computer, and AI tools without setup. Choose darktable if you want a free, Lightroom-style workflow that you control, work on Linux, or enjoy technical image processing and are prepared to learn it.

Which should you pick?

Choose Adobe Lightroom if…

  • Photographers who want one tool to organise, develop and sync large RAW libraries
  • You need Web, iOS and Android, which darktable doesn't list
  • Strong catalogue tools for rating, keywords and collections
  • Cloud sync between desktop, web and mobile in the Lightroom version

Choose darktable if…

  • Photographers who want a free Lightroom-style workflow and don't mind a technical learning curve
  • You want open-source software
  • You want a free option (Adobe Lightroom is paid only)
  • You need Linux, which Adobe Lightroom doesn't list
  • Free and open source, with no catalogue lock-in

About each app

What is Adobe Lightroom?

Lightroom is where many photographers import, sort, rate and develop their RAW files. It comes in two flavours that share one plan: Lightroom, which stores originals in Adobe's cloud and syncs edits between desktop, web and mobile, and Lightroom Classic, which keeps the catalogue and files on your own drives and is still preferred by many working pros. Both offer non-destructive sliders, AI masking for subject and sky, presets, Content-Aware and Generative Remove, Denoise and Super Resolution. The trade-off is lock-in: edits live in Lightroom's catalogue, and the software is available only as a Creative Cloud subscription. The Lightroom plan includes 1TB of cloud storage, and a Photography plan bundles it with Photoshop. The mobile app for iOS and Android is free to use for basic editing, with premium features unlocked by a subscription.

What is darktable?

darktable is the most complete open-source alternative to Lightroom. Like Lightroom it splits work into a lighttable for importing, rating and tagging, and a darkroom for non-destructive development, with a map view, tethered capture and slideshow modes alongside. Its processing pipeline is scene-referred and highly technical: modules such as filmic and sigmoid tone mapping, color calibration, and parametric and drawn masks give fine control, and you can stack many instances of a module. That depth comes with a learning curve, and defaults can feel unfamiliar to people coming from Adobe. Edits are stored in XMP sidecar files next to your images, so they are not locked into a proprietary catalogue. darktable is free under the GNU GPL and is built by volunteers. It runs on Linux, Windows and Apple silicon Macs.
