Cloudflare R2 vs Google Cloud Storage
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Cloudflare R2
Cloudflare's S3-compatible object storage with no egress fees and a monthly free tier.

Google Cloud Storage
Google Cloud's object storage service for files, backups, data lakes and website assets.
The short answer
Cloudflare R2 suits developers serving files to the public internet, because it charges no egress fees and works with S3 tools. Google Cloud Storage suits teams already on Google Cloud that want storage next to BigQuery, Vertex AI and Cloud Run, with more storage classes and bucket locations. The biggest difference is egress: R2 charges none, while Google bills outbound transfer.
Cloudflare R2 or Google Cloud Storage: our take
Both are pay-as-you-go object storage services with a free allowance, but they are built around different priorities. Cloudflare R2 runs inside Cloudflare's network and is designed for serving data: it charges nothing for egress, Standard storage is $0.015 per GB-month, and the free tier covers 10 GB of storage plus a monthly allowance of reads and writes. Google Cloud Storage bills storage, operations and outbound data transfer separately, which makes costs harder to predict for public-facing files. Its free allowance is smaller, at 5 GB-months of Standard storage, though new Google Cloud customers get $300 in free credits.
On features, Google Cloud Storage goes further. It has four storage classes (Standard, Nearline, Coldline and Archive), lifecycle rules and Autoclass to move objects between them, and regional, dual-region or multi-region buckets. The colder classes carry minimum storage durations. R2 offers just a Standard class and an Infrequent Access class, the latter with retrieval fees and no free tier, and has fewer data management features overall. Its write operations also cost more per million than some rivals.
Integration is the other dividing line. R2 exposes an S3-compatible API, so existing S3 SDKs and tools work after changing the endpoint, and it has a native API for Cloudflare Workers. It also includes tools to migrate data from other S3-style providers. Google Cloud Storage connects directly to BigQuery, Vertex AI, Cloud Run and the rest of Google Cloud, which matters for analytics and machine-learning pipelines.
Pick R2 for public assets, downloads, images or datasets where bandwidth would dominate the bill, or for apps built on Cloudflare Workers. Pick Google Cloud Storage when the data mainly feeds Google Cloud compute and analytics, or when archive tiers and multi-region buckets matter more than egress costs.
Which should you pick?
Choose Cloudflare R2 if…
- Developers serving files to the web who want to avoid egress fees, especially on Cloudflare Workers
- No egress charges for any storage class
- Free tier of 10 GB storage and millions of operations a month
Choose Google Cloud Storage if…
- Teams on Google Cloud that need durable object storage close to their compute and analytics.
- Four storage classes with automatic lifecycle moves
- Small monthly free allowance plus starting credits
About each app
What is Cloudflare R2?
Cloudflare R2 is an object storage service on Cloudflare's developer platform. It exposes an S3-compatible API, so existing S3 tools and SDKs work after switching the endpoint, and it also has a native API for Cloudflare Workers, which lets serverless code read and write buckets without managing keys. The main draw is that R2 charges nothing for egress, so serving files, images or datasets to the internet doesn't add bandwidth bills. You pay for stored data and for two classes of operations, with a Standard class and a cheaper Infrequent Access class that adds retrieval fees. A free tier covers 10 GB of Standard storage plus a set number of reads and writes each month. Migration tools can copy data from other S3-style providers, either in bulk or gradually as objects are requested. It runs entirely in Cloudflare's network and is managed from the dashboard, API or CLI. It suits developers serving public assets or building apps on Cloudflare.
What is Google Cloud Storage?
Google Cloud Storage keeps files of any size as objects in buckets and serves them over an API, the Google Cloud counterpart to Amazon S3. It offers four main storage classes, Standard, Nearline, Coldline and Archive, which trade a lower monthly price for minimum storage periods on the colder classes. Lifecycle rules and Autoclass can move objects between classes automatically based on access. Buckets can be regional, dual-region or multi-region, and the service plugs directly into BigQuery, Vertex AI, Cloud Run and the rest of Google Cloud. Developers use it for app uploads, static assets, backups, analytics data and machine-learning datasets. Pricing is pay-as-you-go for storage, operations and outbound data transfer, with a small monthly free allowance and starting credits for new customers. It is a sensible default for teams already running on Google Cloud, and less so for those wanting zero egress fees.
