CRED vs Google Pay
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

CRED
Indian members-only app for paying credit card bills, UPI payments and earning rewards.

Google Pay
Google's UPI payments app for India: send money, pay shops and settle bills from your bank account.
The short answer
Google Pay is a plain UPI app open to anyone in India with a bank account; CRED is a members-only app for credit card holders with a score of 750 or more, built around paying card bills and earning rewards. For everyday transfers and shop payments, Google Pay is simpler. For managing credit card bills and collecting rewards, CRED does more.
CRED or Google Pay: our take
Both apps are free, run on Android and iOS, and handle UPI payments in India, so they overlap more than they used to. They start from different places. Google Pay is Google's UPI app: it links straight to your bank account, works with every bank on BHIM UPI, and lets you send money, scan shop QR codes, pay bills and recharge phones with zero transfer fees. CRED started as a credit card bill app and added UPI later; you can now scan any UPI QR code, send money to people on other UPI apps, and link RuPay credit cards to UPI.
The biggest practical difference is who can join. CRED requires a credit score of 750 or above and an Indian mobile number. Google Pay only needs a phone number, a screen lock and a linked bank account. If you don't have a credit card or a high score, CRED isn't an option.
For card owners, CRED does things Google Pay doesn't: it pays bills for cards from most major Indian banks in one place, sends due-date reminders, flags hidden fees, tracks spending and shows your CIBIL score for free. Payments earn CRED coins and cashback, though rewards are mostly partner offers rather than plain cash. Google Pay's rewards are scratch cards and offers, which are less predictable. Both offer personal loans through the app, and Google Pay has a co-branded card; Google Pay also has a 24/7 toll-free support line.
For simple, uncluttered payments from your bank, Google Pay is the easier daily app. If you hold credit cards and qualify, CRED is worth having for bills, reminders and rewards. Many people keep both: CRED for card bills, Google Pay for quick transfers.

About each app
What is CRED?
CRED is an Indian app built around credit card owners. Membership requires a credit score of 750 or above, and once in, you can pay bills for cards from most major Indian banks, get due-date reminders, spot hidden fees and track your spending. Each payment earns CRED coins and cashback that can be spent on partner brands and offers. Over time CRED has added UPI: you can scan any UPI QR code, send money to people on other UPI apps, link RuPay credit cards to UPI, and tap to pay. It also shows your CIBIL credit score at no cost and offers products such as personal loans (CRED cash), rent and bill payments, and a car-management section. The app is free to use and makes money from partners and financial products. It's available on Android and iOS for people with an Indian mobile number. The rewards side is the main draw; people who just want simple UPI transfers may find it heavier than they need.
What is Google Pay?
Google Pay is Google's payment app for India, built on the country's UPI system. It links directly to your bank account, so there's no wallet to top up: you can send money to contacts, scan QR codes at shops, pay bills and recharge your phone, and pay at online stores that accept UPI. Sending and receiving money is free, and it works with every bank that supports BHIM UPI. Rewards come as scratch cards and offers rather than points. Google has also added credit products, including personal loans from partner lenders and a co-branded card, all applied for inside the app. Setup takes a phone number, a screen lock and a linked bank account, and the app runs on Android and iOS. Outside India, Google replaced its Pay app with Google Wallet, so this entry is specifically about the Indian UPI app. Compared with Paytm or PhonePe it's plainer, with fewer extra services but a less cluttered home screen.
