CRED
Indian members-only app for paying credit card bills, UPI payments and earning rewards.

PhonePe
India's large UPI payments app, with bill payments, investments, insurance, loans and travel booking.
The short answer
PhonePe suits anyone in India who wants one UPI app for payments, bills, recharges, travel and investments. CRED suits credit card holders with a score of 750 or more who want bill reminders, fee tracking and rewards on payments. The biggest difference is audience: PhonePe is a general payments app for almost everyone, while CRED is a members-only app built around credit cards.
CRED or PhonePe: our take
PhonePe is one of India's largest UPI apps, with about 73 crore registered users and over 5 crore merchants. You link a bank account to send money, scan QR codes and pay online, and can use UPI Lite for small payments or link a RuPay credit card or pre-approved credit line to UPI. It also handles mobile and DTH recharges, electricity bills, FASTag, rent and credit card bills, books flights, trains, buses and hotels, and sells mutual funds, digital gold, insurance and loans. UPI payments work at select merchants in Singapore, UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Mauritius. The trade-off is a busy app that pushes many offers.
CRED is built for credit card owners and requires a credit score of 750 or above to join; it has 25 million+ members. It pays card bills for most major Indian banks, sends due-date reminders, flags hidden fees and tracks spending, and each payment earns CRED coins and cashback to spend on partner brands. It has added UPI too, including scanning QR codes, paying contacts on other UPI apps, RuPay credit cards on UPI and tap to pay, and it shows your CIBIL score for free through a soft inquiry. It also offers personal loans, rent payments and a car section. Rewards are mostly partner offers rather than plain cash.
Both apps are free, run on Android and iOS, and need an Indian mobile number. PhonePe makes sense as the everyday payments app for anyone, including people without a credit card or with thin credit history. CRED makes sense for people with good credit and several cards who want bills organised and rewards on each payment. Many card holders use both: PhonePe for daily UPI, bills and travel, and CRED for paying card bills and collecting rewards.

About each app
What is CRED?
CRED is an Indian app built around credit card owners. Membership requires a credit score of 750 or above, and once in, you can pay bills for cards from most major Indian banks, get due-date reminders, spot hidden fees and track your spending. Each payment earns CRED coins and cashback that can be spent on partner brands and offers. Over time CRED has added UPI: you can scan any UPI QR code, send money to people on other UPI apps, link RuPay credit cards to UPI, and tap to pay. It also shows your CIBIL credit score at no cost and offers products such as personal loans (CRED cash), rent and bill payments, and a car-management section. The app is free to use and makes money from partners and financial products. It's available on Android and iOS for people with an Indian mobile number. The rewards side is the main draw; people who just want simple UPI transfers may find it heavier than they need.
What is PhonePe?
PhonePe is one of India's most widely used payment apps, built around UPI. You link a bank account to send money, scan QR codes in shops and pay online, and you can also use UPI Lite for small payments, link a RuPay credit card or a pre-approved bank credit line to UPI, and split expenses with friends. Beyond payments it handles mobile and DTH recharges, electricity and other bills, FASTag, rent and credit card bills, and books flights, trains, buses and hotels. It also sells mutual funds, digital gold, insurance and loans, and offers co-branded credit cards. Outside India, UPI payments work at select merchants in a few countries. The app is free to use; PhonePe earns from merchants, financial products and ads. The breadth is the main reason to pick it and also the main complaint: the app pushes many offers. It requires an Indian bank account and runs on Android and iPhone.
