DuckDuckGo vs Google Search
Updated October 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

DuckDuckGo
Private search engine that doesn't track your searches, plus a privacy browser and optional AI chat.

Google Search
The world's default web search engine, now layered with AI Overviews and a conversational AI Mode.
The short answer
Both are free, ad-supported search engines. Google has the largest, freshest index and is strongest for local results, maps, shopping and breaking news, but personalises results using your account activity. DuckDuckGo keeps no search history tied to you and shows ads based only on the current query, drawing largely on Bing's index. Pick Google for coverage, DuckDuckGo if not being profiled matters more.
DuckDuckGo or Google Search: our take
Google's advantage is its index and the services around it: Maps, Lens visual search, Shopping and news, plus AI Overviews at the top of results and AI Mode for conversational follow-ups. It is the default in Chrome and most Android phones. The trade-offs are ads and shopping units pushing organic results down, AI answers appearing on many queries whether you want them or not, and personalisation by default using your account and activity data. DuckDuckGo, launched in 2008 and now handling about 3 billion searches a month, takes the opposite position on data: no history tied to you, no ad profile, and ads based only on what you just typed.
DuckDuckGo's results come from many sources, largely Bing, combined with its own crawler and sources such as Wikipedia. That makes everyday results solid, but it can lag Google for very local or very recent searches, and its results are rarely unique. It offers useful extras: bangs such as !w to jump straight to another site's search, instant answers, and Duck.ai, a free, optional private chat front end for AI models. DuckDuckGo also makes a tracker-blocking browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, and sells an optional subscription with a VPN and data-broker removal.
A common approach is to use DuckDuckGo by default and reach Google when needed, which bangs make easy. Choose Google if you rely on local businesses, maps, shopping or news from the last hour, or want its AI features. Choose DuckDuckGo if you want a familiar search engine that does not build a profile of you and you can accept occasionally weaker local and breaking-news results.
Which should you pick?
Choose DuckDuckGo if…
- People who want a familiar, free search engine without being profiled
- You need Windows, macOS and Browser extension, which Google Search doesn't list
- No search history or ad profile tied to you
- Bangs make jumping to other sites' search very fast
Choose Google Search if…
- Anyone who wants the broadest, freshest index and strong local, maps and shopping results
- Largest and freshest web index, especially for local and recent results
- Deep integration with Maps, Lens, Shopping and other Google services
About each app
What is DuckDuckGo?
DuckDuckGo is the best-known private alternative to Google. It does not keep a search history tied to you or build an advertising profile, and the ads it shows are based on the current query only. Results come from many sources, largely Microsoft's Bing index, combined with DuckDuckGo's own crawler and specialised sources such as Wikipedia. Handy extras include bangs (type !w or !a to jump straight to a site's own search), instant answers, and Duck.ai, a private chat front end for popular AI models that you can switch off. The company also makes a privacy browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android that blocks trackers and cookie pop-ups. Search is free and ad-supported; a paid subscription adds a VPN, data-broker removal and more AI models. Results are usually good for everyday queries but can lag Google on very local or very recent searches.
What is Google Search?
Google Search is the search engine most people use without thinking about it. Its index is the largest and freshest of any public engine, and it is hard to beat for local results, maps, shopping, news, niche technical queries and anything that happened in the last hour. In recent years Google has wrapped classic results in AI: AI Overviews summarise answers at the top of the page, AI Mode turns search into a back-and-forth conversation, and Lens lets you search with your camera. It is free to use and paid for by advertising, and results are personalised using your Google account activity unless you turn that off. It runs in any browser and through the Google app on iOS and Android, and it is the default in Chrome and most Android phones. People leave it over ads crowding the top of results, SEO spam, AI answers they did not ask for, or how much data it ties to their account.
