Google Pay vs PhonePe

Google Pay
Google's UPI payments app for India: send money, pay shops and settle bills from your bank account.

PhonePe
India's large UPI payments app, with bill payments, investments, insurance, loans and travel booking.
The short answer
Google Pay and PhonePe are both free UPI apps for India that link straight to your bank account. Google Pay is the simpler, less cluttered choice for sending money and paying shops. PhonePe does far more, adding travel booking, investments, insurance, UPI Lite and credit on UPI, at the cost of a busier app full of offers.
Google Pay or PhonePe: our take
At their core the two apps do the same thing. Both run on India's UPI system, link directly to a bank account, and let you send money to contacts, scan QR codes in shops, pay bills, recharge phones and pay online. Neither charges for transfers, and both run on Android and iOS. Day to day, either one will get a payment through.
Google Pay keeps things plain. Transfers are free, it works with all banks on BHIM UPI, and rewards come as scratch cards and offers rather than predictable cashback. Google has added personal loans from partner lenders and a co-branded card, but the home screen stays relatively uncluttered, and there is a 24/7 toll-free phone line for support. It does not book travel or movie tickets, and it is India-only: in other countries Google uses Google Wallet instead.
PhonePe is closer to a super-app. Beyond UPI it handles DTH, electricity, FASTag, rent and credit card bills, books flights, trains, buses and hotels, and sells mutual funds, digital gold, insurance and loans. It supports UPI Lite for small payments, lets you link RuPay credit cards and credit lines to UPI, and can split expenses with friends. UPI also works at select merchants in Singapore, the UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Mauritius. With about 73 crore registered users and over 5 crore merchants, it is accepted almost everywhere. The main complaint is that the app pushes many offers for financial products.
Choose Google Pay if you mostly send money and pay at shops and want the fewest distractions. Choose PhonePe if you want bills, travel, investments and credit-card UPI payments in one place, or plan to use UPI abroad in the countries it supports. Since both are free and link to the same bank account, many people keep both installed.
Which should you pick?
Choose Google Pay if…
- People in India who want a simple, clutter-free UPI app tied directly to their bank
- Free bank-to-bank transfers over UPI
- Works with every bank that supports BHIM UPI
Choose PhonePe if…
- People in India who want UPI, bills, recharges and investments in one app
- Accepted almost everywhere in India
- Bills, recharges, FASTag and travel booking in the same app
About each app
What is Google Pay?
Google Pay is Google's payment app for India, built on the country's UPI system. It links directly to your bank account, so there's no wallet to top up: you can send money to contacts, scan QR codes at shops, pay bills and recharge your phone, and pay at online stores that accept UPI. Sending and receiving money is free, and it works with every bank that supports BHIM UPI. Rewards come as scratch cards and offers rather than points. Google has also added credit products, including personal loans from partner lenders and a co-branded card, all applied for inside the app. Setup takes a phone number, a screen lock and a linked bank account, and the app runs on Android and iOS. Outside India, Google replaced its Pay app with Google Wallet, so this entry is specifically about the Indian UPI app. Compared with Paytm or PhonePe it's plainer, with fewer extra services but a less cluttered home screen.
What is PhonePe?
PhonePe is one of India's most widely used payment apps, built around UPI. You link a bank account to send money, scan QR codes in shops and pay online, and you can also use UPI Lite for small payments, link a RuPay credit card or a pre-approved bank credit line to UPI, and split expenses with friends. Beyond payments it handles mobile and DTH recharges, electricity and other bills, FASTag, rent and credit card bills, and books flights, trains, buses and hotels. It also sells mutual funds, digital gold, insurance and loans, and offers co-branded credit cards. Outside India, UPI payments work at select merchants in a few countries. The app is free to use; PhonePe earns from merchants, financial products and ads. The breadth is the main reason to pick it and also the main complaint: the app pushes many offers. It requires an Indian bank account and runs on Android and iPhone.
