Gumtree vs Vinted
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Gumtree
UK local classifieds site for things for sale, cars, property, jobs, services and pets.

Vinted
Second-hand marketplace app for buying and selling clothes, with no selling fees for private sellers.
The short answer
Gumtree is a UK classifieds site for local sales of furniture, household goods and used cars, plus property, jobs, services and pets. Vinted is a shipping-based marketplace, best known for second-hand clothes, with no selling fees and buyer protection. Sell bulky items or cars to local buyers on Gumtree; sell clothes and small items that post easily on Vinted.
Gumtree or Vinted: our take
The two work very differently. Gumtree is a classifieds board: you post an ad, buyers message you, and most sales end in local collection and payment between the two of you. That makes it a good fit for sofas, wardrobes, appliances and used cars, and its motors section adds car reviews and buying guides. It also covers property, jobs, local tradespeople and pets. Vinted is a marketplace built around posting items: the seller lists for free, gets a prepaid shipping label when something sells and drops the parcel off, and payment goes through Vinted.
Fees and protection follow from that. Posting most Gumtree ads is free, but some categories cost money, paid upgrades are often needed to stand out, and most local sales have no built-in buyer protection. Vinted charges private sellers 0% and instead adds a buyer fee to each purchase, which pays for buyer protection: a refund if an item doesn't arrive, is damaged or is significantly not as described, as long as it's reported within a short window after delivery. Sellers are paid once the buyer confirms the order.
Reach differs too. This Gumtree entry covers the UK site only, with separate Gumtree sites in Australia and South Africa. Vinted, founded in Lithuania in 2008, operates in many European countries and the US. Both run on the web, iOS and Android.
For UK sellers clearing a house, selling a car or offering a service, Gumtree's local audience is the better match. For clothes, kids' items, books and small electronics, Vinted's fee-free selling and tracked, protected shipping usually make it the easier route, though low prices mean small returns per item.

About each app
What is Gumtree?
Gumtree is the UK's best-known general classifieds site. Its listings cover goods for sale, a large cars and vans section, property to rent or buy, jobs, local tradespeople and services, pets, and community posts such as lost and found or rideshares. Most item listings are local collection, with some sellers offering delivery, and buyers contact sellers through Gumtree's messaging. It is especially busy for furniture, household items and used cars, and has car reviews and buying guides alongside the motors listings. Posting most ads is free; Gumtree charges for some categories and for optional upgrades that push an ad up the results, and dealers and agencies pay for business packages. It runs in the browser and through apps for iOS and Android. This entry covers the UK site; separate Gumtree sites operate in Australia and South Africa.
What is Vinted?
Vinted is a peer-to-peer marketplace for second-hand goods, started in Lithuania in 2008 and best known for clothing, though it now also covers kids' items, home goods, electronics, books and designer pieces. Sellers photograph an item, set a price and list it for free; when it sells, they print a prepaid shipping label and drop the parcel off. Private sellers pay no selling fee. Instead, buyers pay a service fee on each purchase, which funds Vinted's buyer protection: a refund if an item doesn't arrive, is damaged or is significantly not as described, provided you report it shortly after delivery. Payments go through Vinted, and sellers are paid once the buyer confirms the order. It operates in many European countries and in the US, through apps for iPhone and Android and the website. The trade-off: buyers pay the extra fee on every order, the problem-reporting window is short, and listings are often low-priced, so selling many cheap items takes time.
