The short answer

Kleinanzeigen suits people in Germany buying or selling almost anything locally, from furniture and bikes to cars, flats and jobs, usually with collection in person. Vinted suits people across Europe and the US selling or buying second-hand clothes and smaller items by post, with no selling fees. The biggest difference: Kleinanzeigen is a broad local classifieds site, Vinted is a shipping-first marketplace centred on fashion.

Kleinanzeigen or Vinted: our take

Kleinanzeigen, known until 2023 as eBay Kleinanzeigen and owned by Adevinta since 2021, is Germany's largest classifieds site. Private sellers post ads for nearly anything, including cars, rental flats, jobs and local services. There are no auctions: items are listed at a fixed price or open to offers, and buyer and seller agree the deal in the app's chat, then meet or ship. Vinted, founded in Lithuania in 2008, is a peer-to-peer marketplace best known for clothing that now also covers kids' items, home goods, electronics, books and designer pieces. Sellers list, and when an item sells they print a prepaid label and drop off the parcel.

The fee models differ. On Kleinanzeigen, listing is free for private users within limits, with paid options to push an ad higher; businesses pay per extra ad (from €3.49) or subscribe to PRO plans for a company page and better placement. Vinted charges private sellers nothing; instead buyers pay a service fee on every order, which funds buyer protection. On Kleinanzeigen, buyer protection is optional and applies when the secure-payment service is used, with DHL and Hermes labels available in the platform.

Scope and safety also differ. Kleinanzeigen is Germany only and in German, and scam messages are common, as on most classifieds sites. Vinted runs in many European countries and the US, routes all payments through the app and pays sellers once the buyer confirms, though the window to report a problem after delivery is short. Low prices on Vinted mean selling lots of cheap items takes time.

Use Kleinanzeigen for bulky or local items, cars, flats and anything that is easier to collect in person, or when you want to negotiate. Use Vinted to clear out clothes and smaller items by post with no selling fee, or to shop second-hand fashion cheaply with built-in protection.

About each app

What is Kleinanzeigen?

Kleinanzeigen is the German classifieds marketplace that most people still know by its old name, eBay Kleinanzeigen. Private sellers post ads for almost anything, from sofas and bikes to cars, rental flats, jobs and local services, and buyers either collect in person or have the item shipped. There are no auctions: items go up at a fixed price or as open to offers (VB), and the two sides agree the deal in the app's chat. An optional secure-payment service adds buyer protection, and shipping labels for DHL and Hermes can be bought inside the platform. Listing is free for private users within limits, with paid options to push an ad higher; businesses pay per ad or subscribe to Kleinanzeigen PRO for a company page and better placement. It runs on the web and in iOS and Android apps, and is aimed at Germany. eBay sold it to Adevinta in 2021 and the eBay name was dropped in 2023, so it is now a separate company from eBay.

What is Vinted?

Vinted is a peer-to-peer marketplace for second-hand goods, started in Lithuania in 2008 and best known for clothing, though it now also covers kids' items, home goods, electronics, books and designer pieces. Sellers photograph an item, set a price and list it for free; when it sells, they print a prepaid shipping label and drop the parcel off. Private sellers pay no selling fee. Instead, buyers pay a service fee on each purchase, which funds Vinted's buyer protection: a refund if an item doesn't arrive, is damaged or is significantly not as described, provided you report it shortly after delivery. Payments go through Vinted, and sellers are paid once the buyer confirms the order. It operates in many European countries and in the US, through apps for iPhone and Android and the website. The trade-off: buyers pay the extra fee on every order, the problem-reporting window is short, and listings are often low-priced, so selling many cheap items takes time.
