Facts checked Oct 25, 2026AppBreakup editorialHow we rank

Common reasons people leave Snagit: now a subscription rather than a one-time purchase, and video features are basic, with no real editor. We ranked 6 alternatives by how directly each one replaces Snagit, then by reviews, real visits and how recently each app's facts were checked against its own website. CleanShot X currently ranks first.

What is the best alternative to Snagit?

CleanShot X ranks first right now. Mac-native capture with a one-time licence option and built-in cloud sharing. ShareX and Zight follow it in our ranking.

Is there a free alternative to Snagit?

Yes. ShareX (open source), Zight (free plan + paid) and Awesome Screenshot (free plan + paid) have a free option. Check each app's verified facts for current plan limits.

Is there an open-source alternative to Snagit?

Yes: ShareX.

Why do people switch from Snagit?

The complaints we hear most: now a subscription rather than a one-time purchase; video features are basic, with no real editor; overkill if you only take a few screenshots a week.
