The short answer

Both come from TechSmith and run on Windows and macOS, and Snagit is included in Camtasia's bundled plans. Snagit is for fast, annotated screenshots and short clips, with scrolling capture, text extraction and redaction. Camtasia is a recorder plus timeline editor for polished tutorials and course videos. Pick Snagit for everyday documentation and support captures, Camtasia when you produce edited instructional videos.

Camtasia or Snagit: our take

Snagit is known mainly for screenshots. It captures long pages with scrolling capture, extracts text, redacts sensitive details and offers step-by-step templates and a strong annotation editor with arrows, callouts and blur. It also records short screen and webcam videos and exports them as MP4s or GIFs, but it has no real video editor. Camtasia starts where Snagit stops: it records screen and webcam with cursor data, so afterwards you can smooth mouse movement, highlight clicks, enlarge the pointer and add zoom-and-pan effects. Its timeline editor adds annotations, callouts, captions, quizzes and themes, records at up to 4K UHD, and newer plans include AI script generation, avatars and translation.

Both are subscriptions now. Snagit is a per-user annual subscription, sold alone or within Camtasia plans, with volume licences for teams of five or more. Camtasia is sold in tiered annual plans: an entry Starter plan focused on screen capture, and higher plans adding the full editor, the Audiate audio editor and AI features, with Snagit bundled. Camtasia's free download lets you try everything, but exports carry a watermark until you pay. For occasional users, both subscriptions can feel expensive, and neither is a cinematic or social-first editor.

In practice many teams use both: Snagit for the quick screenshot in a support reply or help article, Camtasia for the onboarding video or course module. Choose Snagit if you are a support agent or technical writer whose output is mostly images and short clips. Choose Camtasia, ideally a bundle that includes Snagit, if you regularly produce software tutorials, training or course content that needs editing.

  • Excellent annotation, redaction and scrolling capture
  • Screenshots, GIFs and short videos in one app

About each app

What is Camtasia?

Camtasia from TechSmith pairs a screen and webcam recorder with a timeline editor designed for instructional video. Recordings keep cursor data, so you can smooth mouse movement, highlight clicks, enlarge the pointer and add zoom-and-pan effects after the fact. Annotations, callouts, captions, quizzes and themes cover what training and documentation teams usually need, and newer plans add AI features such as script generation, avatars and translation. It runs on Windows and macOS with near-identical features. TechSmith now sells Camtasia through tiered annual plans, with an entry plan focused on capture and higher plans adding the full editor, the Audiate audio editor and AI features; Snagit is included in the bundles. The free download lets you try everything, but exports are watermarked until you pay. Compared with consumer editors it is pricier and more specialised, but it saves a lot of time for people producing software tutorials, onboarding videos and course content.

What is Snagit?

Snagit, now branded Camtasia Snagit, is TechSmith's long-running capture tool. It is best known for screenshots: scrolling capture of long pages, text extraction, redaction of sensitive details, step-by-step templates and a strong annotation editor with arrows, callouts and blur. It also records short screen and webcam videos and turns them into MP4s or GIFs, which makes it a good fit for support teams and technical writers who mix images and clips in documentation. It runs on Windows and macOS. Snagit is sold as an annual subscription per user, either on its own or as part of the Camtasia plans, and teams can buy volume licences. Sharing goes to TechSmith's Screencast service, cloud drives or the clipboard. It is not a video editor, so long recordings or polished tutorials are better made in Camtasia or similar tools; Snagit is about fast, well-annotated captures for everyday communication.
