About 3D Slicer

3D Slicer is a free, open-source application for visualising and analysing medical images, developed over almost two decades with funding from the US National Institutes of Health. It loads DICOM and many research formats and goes well beyond viewing: manual and AI-assisted segmentation, 3D model building, image registration, quantitative measurements and volume rendering. A large extension catalogue adds specialist toolkits for radiotherapy, image-guided surgery, morphology and radiomics, and everything can be scripted in Python. Researchers, medical physicists and 3D printing labs use it heavily. It runs on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and many Linux distributions, with stable and nightly preview builds. It is not certified as a clinical diagnostic device, and its breadth makes it slower to learn than a simple viewer for someone who only wants to look at a scan from a CD.

Best for: Researchers and labs who need segmentation, 3D models and scripting on medical images.

Pros and cons
