About Weasis
Weasis is an open-source viewer for medical images in the DICOM format, with roots at the University Hospitals of Geneva where it is used in production. It opens common exam types such as CT, MR, ultrasound, X-ray, mammography and PET, plus ECGs, structured reports, segmentations and radiotherapy plans, and offers 2D reading, multiplanar reconstruction, 3D volume rendering, measurements and annotations. Its main strength is integration: it can query and retrieve from a PACS over classic DICOM or DICOMweb, be launched from a web portal or EHR with a weasis:// link, and export studies as DICOMDIR, ZIP or a CD image with the viewer embedded. Native installers exist for Windows, macOS and Linux, and it also works offline from local folders or discs. It is free under EPL 2.0 or Apache 2.0. The interface is less polished than paid workstations, and setting up PACS links is work for an administrator rather than a patient.
Best for: Hospitals, researchers and clinicians who want a free DICOM viewer that plugs into PACS and web portals.
