About Autotrader UK
Autotrader is where most people in the UK start looking for a car. It lists hundreds of thousands of new and used cars, vans and bikes from dealers and private sellers, with filters for budget, monthly payment, fuel type and more, plus price indicator labels that show whether a car is priced fairly against the market. Sellers can get a free valuation, place a private advert, or take an instant offer instead of advertising. Some dealers also let you build a deal, reserve or finance a car online. It began as a regional print magazine, went fully digital in 2013 and is now run by a London-listed company. Browsing and valuations are free for buyers; private sellers pay for adverts, and dealers pay subscriptions. It runs on the web and on iOS and Android apps. It only covers the UK, and most stock comes from dealers, so private bargains are less common than on general classifieds sites.
Best for: UK car buyers who want the widest choice of dealer and private stock in one place.
Pros and cons
What works

- Price indicator labels compare each advert with the market
- Free valuation tool and instant-offer option for sellers
Why people leave
- UK only
- Private sellers pay to advertise, unlike free classifieds
- Mostly dealer stock, so fewer private-sale bargains
