About CoCalc
CoCalc is an online workspace for collaborative computing, long popular with university courses and researchers. A project holds Jupyter notebooks, LaTeX documents, terminals, a Linux desktop, whiteboards and slides, with software such as Python, R, Julia, SageMath and Octave preinstalled. Collaborators edit notebooks and LaTeX in real time with shared kernels, chat threads attached to cells or lines, and TimeTravel history that lets you step back through every edit. Course tools distribute, collect and grade assignments. The service now leads with AI: the integrated Codex agent, Claude Code and other command-line agents can work inside a project with its files and software. A free tier covers light exploration; paid memberships add better hosts, network access, more projects and dedicated VMs, with team seats and university licences available. CoCalc Plus runs it on your own computer and CoCalc Star on a server you control, the latter free of charge. It suits instructors, students and research groups who want shared notebooks and LaTeX without managing servers.
Best for: Instructors, students and research groups sharing Jupyter notebooks and LaTeX papers.
