About Coder

Coder lets a company run cloud development environments on its own infrastructure. Admins define workspaces as code, usually with Terraform templates, so every developer and every approved AI coding agent starts from the same setup on Kubernetes, VMs or containers in the company's cloud or data centre. Developers connect with VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Cursor, Jupyter or a browser, and workspaces can start and stop on a schedule to control costs. The open-source Community edition is free and includes unlimited workspaces and templates; the paid Premium and AI Premium tiers add high availability, multi-organisation access control, audit logging, quotas, an AI gateway and SLA support. The core is licensed under AGPL 3.0. It is aimed at platform teams in larger or regulated organisations rather than solo developers.

Best for: Platform teams that need governed, self-hosted dev environments for developers and AI agents.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free open-source Community edition with unlimited workspaces
  • Runs on your own cloud or on-premises infrastructure
  • Works with VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Jupyter and web IDEs
  • Templates as code keep environments consistent

Why people leave

  • You must deploy and operate the Coder server yourself
  • Audit logs, quotas and multi-org controls need a paid tier
  • Paid pricing is quote-based rather than published
