About DevPod
DevPod is a free, open-source desktop app and CLI that creates reproducible development environments from a devcontainer.json file, the same standard used by GitHub Codespaces and VS Code Dev Containers. Each workspace runs in its own container, and providers decide where: your local Docker, a remote machine over SSH, a Kubernetes cluster, or a virtual machine at a cloud provider such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Because it is client-only, there is no server to install, and you pay only for the infrastructure you use; it can shut down idle machines automatically. VS Code and JetBrains IDEs are supported directly, and other editors connect over SSH. It is developed by Loft Labs (now vCluster Labs) under the MPL 2.0 licence and runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. Repository activity has slowed since late 2025.
Best for: Developers and teams who want Codespaces-style environments on their own cloud or laptop without a server.
Pros and cons

- Uses the open devcontainer.json standard, so configs are portable
Why people leave
- No commits to the main repository since November 2025
- No team management, policies or audit features like Coder's
- You manage cloud accounts and costs yourself
