About Docker Swarm
Docker Swarm, or swarm mode, is the clustering and orchestration layer that ships inside Docker Engine. You turn a group of machines running Docker into a swarm with a couple of commands, then deploy services and stacks that the managers keep at the replica count you asked for. It handles service discovery through built-in DNS, an overlay network across hosts, rolling updates, secrets and configs, and mutual TLS between nodes, with Raft consensus among manager nodes. The appeal is simplicity: if you already write Docker Compose files, a stack file is nearly the same, and there is no separate control plane to install. The trade-off is a much smaller ecosystem than Kubernetes, fewer managed cloud offerings and less third-party tooling, so most large teams have moved on while small teams and homelabs still use it. It is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence through the SwarmKit project, and runs mainly on Linux hosts.
Best for: Small teams and homelabs already on Docker Compose who want multi-host services without Kubernetes.
Pros and cons
What works
- Built into Docker Engine, so there is nothing extra to install
- Stack files are close to Docker Compose files
- Mutual TLS between nodes and built-in secrets out of the box
- Far simpler to learn and operate than Kubernetes
Why people leave
- Much smaller ecosystem and community than Kubernetes
- Few managed cloud services offer Swarm clusters
- No built-in autoscaling of services based on load
