About K3s

K3s is a slimmed-down Kubernetes distribution, originally built by Rancher, that keeps full Kubernetes compatibility while cutting the install down to one binary under 70MB. A single command sets up a working server node, and extra machines join as agents with a token. It removes or replaces heavier parts of upstream Kubernetes and bundles what a small cluster needs, which makes it popular for home labs, Raspberry Pi clusters, CI runners and edge devices in remote locations. It supports x86_64, ARM64 and ARMv7. Because it is certified Kubernetes, kubectl, Helm charts and existing manifests work unchanged, so skills and configs carry over to bigger clusters. K3s is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 licence and is a CNCF Sandbox project; commercial support is available through SUSE's Rancher products. It runs on Linux only, and very large production clusters usually choose a fuller distribution or a managed cloud service instead.

Best for: Home labs, edge devices and small clusters that want real Kubernetes with little overhead.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Installs in one command and runs as a single small binary
  • Certified Kubernetes, so kubectl, Helm and manifests work as usual
  • Runs well on ARM boards like the Raspberry Pi

Why people leave

  • Linux only; no native Windows or macOS server
  • Still Kubernetes underneath, so the concepts and learning curve remain
  • Large production estates often need a fuller distribution or managed service
