About Facebook
Facebook is still the largest general-purpose social network, and for many people it is where family updates, school and neighbourhood Groups, local events and second-hand sales on Marketplace happen. You build a profile, connect with friends, follow Pages and join Groups, and your feed mixes posts from people you know with recommended Reels and content picked by Meta's algorithm. Messaging lives in the separate Messenger app. It is free and funded by targeted advertising, which relies on detailed data about what you do on and off Facebook; an ad-free subscription is offered in some regions. It runs in any browser and on Android and iPhone. Its strengths are reach and community features, especially Groups. The weaknesses are just as familiar: an increasingly recommendation-driven feed, privacy concerns and a user base that skews older, which is why younger users tend to spend more time on Instagram or TikTok.
Best for: Keeping up with family, local Groups, events and Marketplace listings.
