About X (Twitter)

X, still widely called Twitter, is the original microblogging platform for short public posts, replies and reposts, and remains a major venue for breaking news, sports, politics, tech and live events. Since Elon Musk bought it in 2022 and renamed it, it has added long posts and video for paying subscribers, a creator revenue-sharing programme, Community Notes for crowd-sourced fact checks, and the Grok AI assistant, while moderation has been scaled back. Free accounts can post up to 280 characters; X Premium subscription tiers unlock longer posts, editing, reduced ads and higher visibility in replies. Developers access data through a paid, pay-per-use API. It runs on the web, Android and iPhone. Its reach among journalists, public figures and fast-moving communities is still large, but many users and advertisers have left over policy changes, and others have moved to Bluesky, Threads or Mastodon.

Best for: Following breaking news, public figures and real-time conversation.
