About Reason
Reason, from Stockholm-based Reason Studios, is built around the Rack: a virtual studio rack where you load synths, samplers, drum machines and effects and connect them with cables on the back panel, much like hardware gear. That approach makes it a favourite for sound design and for producers who enjoy patching, and the instrument collection, including devices built over more than two decades, is large and distinctive. Reason works as a standalone DAW with sequencing, recording and a console-style mixer, and it can also run as a plugin inside other DAWs, so many people use its Rack inside Ableton, Logic or FL Studio. Recent versions refocus the workflow on tracks and add new devices. Third-party Rack Extensions add more instruments and effects. You can buy Reason outright or subscribe to Reason+, which includes all the company's devices, sound packs and extra services. Some see the mixing and audio editing as weaker than the big studio DAWs. It runs on Windows and macOS.
Best for: Producers and sound designers who like patching instruments and effects in a virtual rack.
