About Fossil

Fossil is a distributed version control system from the creator of SQLite that bundles project management into the same tool. Alongside commits and branches, each repository carries its own bug tracker, wiki, forum, technotes and chat, all served by a built-in web interface, so a whole project website can run from one file. It ships as a single self-contained executable for Linux, macOS and Windows and stores everything in an SQLite database, which makes backups and self-hosting simple even on a small VPS. An optional autosync mode reduces needless forks for small teams. Fossil is free and open source under the 2-clause BSD licence. It suits small teams and solo projects that want everything in one place; the drawbacks are a small user base, few third-party tools, and no support on GitHub-style hosting beyond mirroring.

Best for: Small teams and solo developers who want code, tickets and wiki in one self-hosted file.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Bug tracker, wiki, forum and web UI built into the repository
  • Single executable and SQLite storage make install and backup easy
  • Light enough to self-host on a cheap VPS or Raspberry Pi
  • Permissive 2-clause BSD licence

Why people leave

  • Small community and few third-party tools or integrations
  • Mainstream code hosts only support it through a Git mirror
  • Deliberately limits history rewriting, which Git users may miss
