About Funkwhale

Funkwhale is a free-software audio platform for personal music libraries and for publishing music and podcasts. Each server, called a pod, can host users' own collections, which they stream from the web app, Subsonic-compatible clients or podcast apps. What sets it apart is federation over ActivityPub: pods can share and follow content across the network, artists and podcasters can publish channels that people subscribe to from other pods, and moderation tools let admins block bad actors. It has no third-party analytics, tracking or ads. You can self-host a pod or join an existing one. It is developed by a volunteer collective and funded by donations. The federation features make it more involved to run than a single-user music server, development pace has been uneven, and the client apps are fewer and less polished than those for Plex or Navidrome.

Best for: Communities, artists and podcasters who want federated, ad-free audio hosting.
