About Gadget

Gadget is a hosted development platform where the database, backend, frontend hosting and deployment are set up for you. You define data models in the editor, and Gadget generates a database schema, a typed API and client, and actions where you add JavaScript or TypeScript logic. Background jobs, auth, file storage, search and environments for development and production are built in, and it includes connections for Shopify and BigCommerce that handle OAuth, webhooks and API rate limits, which has made it popular for building Shopify apps. An AI assistant can generate parts of an app. Pricing starts with a free Hobby plan with seat and usage limits, then Pro and Premium plans that add seats, production environments and higher included resources, with usage billing beyond them. Everything runs on Gadget's infrastructure and you edit apps in the browser or sync to a local editor. Leaving means rebuilding on another stack, since apps are tied to Gadget's framework.

Best for: JavaScript developers building Shopify apps or small SaaS products who want zero infrastructure.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Database, API, hosting and environments set up automatically
  • Shopify and BigCommerce connections handle OAuth and webhooks
  • Free Hobby plan to start

Why people leave

  • Apps are tied to Gadget, so migrating is a rewrite
  • Seat limits on each plan
  • Less suitable outside JavaScript and TypeScript
