About MongoDB Atlas

MongoDB Atlas is the hosted version of MongoDB, the popular document database, run by MongoDB itself on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure. It handles provisioning, backups, scaling, upgrades and monitoring, and adds features beyond the open database such as full-text search, vector search for AI applications, stream processing and clusters that span several clouds or regions. Developers use it as the database behind Node.js, Python and other backends, or with ORMs and ODMs such as Mongoose. Atlas offers a free cluster with limited storage for learning, Flex clusters billed hourly with a monthly cap for development and small apps, and dedicated clusters for production that are priced per hour by size. It is a database service rather than a full backend: there is no built-in auth or file storage for end users, since MongoDB retired its App Services layer. Management happens in a web console, CLI and Terraform provider.

Best for: Teams building on MongoDB who want it managed on their preferred cloud.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Run by the MongoDB company on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure
  • Built-in full-text and vector search
  • Free cluster for learning and prototypes

Why people leave

  • Dedicated clusters get expensive as data grows
  • Database only, with no end-user auth or storage layer
  • Document modelling can be awkward for heavily relational data
