About Amazon RDS

Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) runs familiar relational engines for you inside AWS: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and Db2, plus Amazon Aurora, AWS's own Postgres- and MySQL-compatible engine with a serverless option. RDS handles provisioning, patching, automated backups, point-in-time restore, read replicas and Multi-AZ failover, while you keep normal SQL access from any driver or ORM. It is the standard choice for production relational databases in AWS-based companies, and it connects to AWS networking, IAM and monitoring. Pricing is pay-as-you-go by instance hour and storage, with reserved instances for discounts, and new customers can try it on the AWS free tier. The trade-offs are AWS complexity, such as VPCs, security groups and parameter groups, and costs that are higher than running Postgres yourself. It gives you a database only; application APIs, auth and storage are up to you.

Best for: AWS-based teams that want standard SQL databases with managed backups and failover.
