About Google Maps

Google Maps is the most widely used map and navigation service. It covers driving, transit, walking and cycling directions with live traffic, Street View imagery, and a very large database of businesses with opening hours, photos and reviews. Recent versions add Gemini-powered questions about places, a more detailed navigation view that zooms in on complex turns, and shared lists for planning trips with friends. Areas can be downloaded for offline driving, though offline maps expire unless updated and transit, cycling and walking directions need a connection. It is free to use on the web, Android and iPhone, and is paid for by advertising and by businesses using Google's mapping APIs. The cost is data: location history and searches feed a Google account, which pushes privacy-minded users towards OpenStreetMap-based apps. Some features are limited to certain countries.

Best for: Anyone who wants the most complete business listings, live traffic and transit directions.
