About Intego
Intego has made security software for Apple computers since 1997. Its current product, Intego ONE, bundles real-time antivirus for macOS, a two-way firewall that lets you approve or block apps going online, SmartClean for removing junk files and leftovers from uninstalled apps, and a VPN. Plans are sold as yearly or two-year subscriptions for one, three or five Macs, with the top plan also covering iPhones; there is no free tier, but purchases come with a money-back guarantee. Intego also sells an antivirus for Windows, though its focus and reputation are on the Mac. The company runs its own malware research team and a Mac security blog. It needs macOS 12.4 or later. It suits Mac owners who want a single app for protection, cleanup and privacy, while people who only want occasional malware scans may find Malwarebytes' free scanner or ClamXAV enough, and the bundled cleaner and VPN are extras some will never use.
Best for: Mac owners who want antivirus, firewall, cleanup and VPN from one vendor.
Pros and cons
What works
- Built specifically for macOS, with a long Mac security track record
- Includes an app-level firewall, which macOS lacks for outgoing traffic
- Top plan covers both Macs and iPhones
Why people leave
- No free tier
- Windows version is a separate, less featured product
- Cleaner and VPN add cost for people who only want antivirus
