About MacPass

MacPass is a native macOS password manager that reads and writes KeePass databases, so the same KDBX file can be shared with KeePass, KeePassXC and mobile KeePass apps. It is aimed at Mac users who want an offline, file-based vault instead of a cloud account, and it behaves like a regular Mac app with tabs, autosave, undo and redo, drag and drop, and Quick Look previews of attachments. Features include global autotype for filling credentials into any app, a password generator, expiry dates, entry history and merging of database files that were changed elsewhere. Plugins can extend it. MacPass is free and open source under the GPLv3, developed by HicknHack Software, and runs only on macOS. There is no built-in sync service or browser extension of its own, so syncing relies on putting the database in a folder such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox.

Best for: Mac users who want a free, native KeePass client and keep their vault as a local file..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and open source under GPLv3
  • Reads and writes both KDB and KDBX KeePass files
  • Native Mac feel with tabs, autosave, undo and Quick Look
  • Global autotype works in any app

Why people leave

  • macOS only; you need other KeePass apps on Windows, Linux or phones
  • No built-in sync service; you sync the file yourself
  • Browser integration is weaker than KeePassXC's official extension
