About MQTTX

MQTTX is a client for testing and debugging MQTT, the messaging protocol used by IoT devices and brokers. It comes in three forms: a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, a command-line tool, and a web version you can run with Docker. The desktop app shows messages in a chat-style view with colour-coded subscriptions, keeps several broker connections side by side, and can read and publish payloads as JSON, Base64, Hex, CBOR or MsgPack, with Protobuf and Avro schemas supported. You can transform payloads with JavaScript, schedule timed messages, view a live topic tree and dashboards, and the CLI adds benchmarking and simulated IoT data. Recent versions add an optional AI agent that drives the app using your own API key. MQTTX is free and open source under Apache 2.0 and is made by EMQ, which sells the EMQX broker, so the site promotes EMQX Cloud.

Best for: IoT developers who test MQTT brokers and devices from a GUI or the terminal.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Desktop, CLI and Docker-hosted web versions share one tool
  • Full MQTT 5.0, 3.1.1 and 3.1 support over TCP, TLS and WebSocket
  • Payload scripting, benchmarking and IoT data simulation

Why people leave

  • MQTT only; you need a separate client for HTTP or gRPC APIs
  • The site and app steer users toward EMQ's paid EMQX Cloud
  • AI agent requires your own model provider API key
