About Mux

Mux is a video platform for developers who want to put video into a product without building an encoding and delivery pipeline. You upload files or push a live stream through its API, and Mux encodes them, stores them and serves adaptive streams through a CDN, with Mux Player as an embeddable player for web and React. Auto-generated captions, thumbnails, GIFs, clipping and storyboards come from the same assets, and Mux Data tracks views, playing time and viewer experience. Mux Robots adds AI jobs such as caption translation, summaries, chapters and content moderation. Pricing is usage-based per minute of storage and delivery, with free monthly delivery minutes, a free plan limited to a small number of videos, pay-as-you-go with a monthly credit, and prepaid credit plans for growing apps. It is a cloud service used through REST APIs and SDKs for most popular languages.

Best for: Developers adding on-demand or live video to an app who want encoding, delivery and analytics in one API.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Encoding, delivery, player and analytics from one vendor
  • Free monthly delivery minutes on every plan
  • Built-in AI jobs for captions, summaries and moderation

Why people leave

  • Free plan stores only a handful of videos and no live streams
  • Per-minute pricing across several meters takes work to forecast
  • Not for real-time two-way calls; that needs a WebRTC platform
