About OpenPencil

OpenPencil is an open-source design editor that reads and writes Figma's .fig files, so you can open existing designs with their pages, components, instances, variables and auto layout intact. It covers the usual interface-design toolkit (constraints, fills, effects, typography, components with variants) and adds variables as design tokens, shader fills, design linting with one-click fixes, and interactive component previews. It is local-first: files live on your disk, no account or internet is needed, and you can sync through your own S3-compatible storage. Peer-to-peer sharing gives live collaboration with cursors, comments and voice calls. A built-in AI agent can edit the document with your own API key, and a CLI plus MCP server let coding agents like Claude Code or Cursor drive it. Selections export to Vue, React, HTML or Tailwind. The editor, engine and CLI are MIT licensed; a hosted team cloud is on a waitlist. It is a young project, so expect rough edges next to Figma.

Best for: Designers and developers who want Figma-file compatibility without a cloud account or lock-in.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Opens and saves .fig files with components and variables
  • Local-first: no account, works offline
  • CLI and MCP server let AI coding agents edit designs
  • MIT licensed editor, engine and file codec

Why people leave

  • Young project; plugins and polish lag behind Figma
  • Hosted team workspace is still waitlist-only
  • Built-in AI needs your own provider API key
