About OpenRouter

OpenRouter is a hosted service that lets developers call hundreds of AI models through a single API key and one credit balance. Instead of signing up with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and many smaller providers separately, you buy credits on OpenRouter and send requests in the OpenAI format, switching models by changing a string. It routes each request to a provider and can fall back to another when one is down, and teams can set data policies that limit which providers see their prompts. A public model list, rankings and a chat playground help compare models. Inference is billed at providers' list prices, and OpenRouter takes a percentage fee when you buy credits. A free tier gives access to a set of free models with a daily request cap, and you can bring your own provider keys. It suits indie developers and startups that want to try many models quickly; larger teams that need to self-host the gateway usually look at LiteLLM or Portkey.

Best for: Developers who want to try and switch between many AI models with one API key and bill.
