About Renoise
Renoise is a digital audio workstation built around the tracker format that dates back to the Amiga era. Instead of drawing notes on a timeline, you type notes, effects and commands into vertical columns of a pattern editor using the keyboard, which experienced users find extremely fast and precise for intricate drum programming, breakbeats, chiptune and glitchy electronic music. Under that interface is a full modern DAW: sample editing, VST and AU plugin hosting, a modular effects chain, MIDI support for hardware, JACK on Linux, and a Lua scripting API with a library of community tools. A separate Redux plugin brings its sampler and phrase sequencing into other DAWs. It is sold as a one-off licence that covers Windows, macOS and Linux, and a demo is available with restrictions such as disabled WAV rendering. The tracker workflow is an acquired taste and not suited to recording long live performances.
Best for: Electronic musicians who love fast, keyboard-driven tracker-style composition.
