About Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is one of the oldest names in language software. Its method is full immersion: lessons pair words and phrases with images and audio in the target language only, so you infer meaning instead of translating, and its TruAccent speech recognition checks pronunciation. Courses cover around two dozen languages, with extras such as stories, phrasebooks and live tutoring sessions, and there are separate products for schools and businesses. Subscriptions cover one language or all languages, and a lifetime option is often available. The immersion approach is gentle for beginners but slow at explaining grammar, and many learners find it repetitive compared with newer apps. It is owned by the education company IXL Learning. It runs on the web, iOS and Android with offline downloads. Rosetta Stone suits patient beginners who like learning by pictures and context rather than rules.

Best for: Patient beginners who prefer immersion with pictures over translation and rules.
