About Shotcut
Shotcut is a free and open-source video editor built on the MLT framework, the same foundation as Kdenlive, by MLT's lead developer. Its main strength is format support: thanks to FFmpeg it opens almost any audio, video and image format and edits them natively on the timeline without importing or transcoding, and it can mix resolutions and frame rates in one project. It includes a multitrack timeline, keyframeable filters, colour grading tools, audio scopes and mixing, subtitles, and capture from webcams, screens and capture devices. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, including portable versions. There are no paid tiers or watermarks. The interface is built from dockable panels that you open as needed, which is flexible but can feel unfamiliar, and effects and titling are more basic than in commercial editors. It suits hobbyists and educators who want a dependable free editor on any operating system.
Best for: Hobbyists who want a free editor that opens almost any file on any OS.
