About SuperCollider

SuperCollider is a free platform for sound synthesis and algorithmic composition used by musicians, sound artists and researchers. It has three parts: scsynth, a real-time audio server; sclang, an interpreted programming language that controls the server; and scide, an editor with built-in help. Because of this client/server design, other programs can drive the audio engine too, and several live coding tools, including TidalCycles through SuperDirt and Sonic Pi, rely on it for sound. A multi-threaded alternative server, supernova, is also included. James McCartney first released SuperCollider in 1996 and made it free software under the GPL in 2002; a community has maintained it since. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and costs nothing. SuperCollider gives far more control over synthesis, effects and audio routing than higher-level tools, but its language and concepts take real time to learn, so many people start with Sonic Pi or Strudel and move to it later.

Best for: Sound designers, researchers and advanced live coders who want deep control over synthesis.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Very deep control over synthesis and audio processing
  • Client/server design lets other tools and languages drive it
  • Free, cross-platform and maintained for decades

Why people leave

  • Steep learning curve for its language and concepts
  • Editor is plain compared with friendlier live coding apps
  • Little hand-holding for making finished tracks
