About Max (Cycling '74)

Max, sometimes called Max/MSP, is a visual programming environment from Cycling '74. Instead of writing code you place objects on a blank canvas and connect them with patch cords: some objects generate or process sound, others handle MIDI, hardware sensors, video or user-interface controls. Musicians use it to build synths, effects and generative instruments; artists use its Jitter tools for real-time video and graphics in installations and live shows; and designers use it to prototype hardware interactions. Gen lets you write low-level DSP that can export source code, a Package Manager adds community extensions, and you can extend Max with JavaScript, Node, Java or C++. Max for Live, co-developed with Ableton, runs Max devices inside Ableton Live, and RNBO exports patches to plugins and hardware. Max is paid software, sold as a licence or subscription, with a fully unlocked 30-day trial. It runs on macOS and Windows.

Best for: Musicians, sound designers and media artists who want to build their own instruments and interactive pieces.
