About TreeSheets

TreeSheets is a desktop data organiser built around one idea: any cell in a grid can contain another grid. That nesting lets it act as an outliner, a mind map, a small database or a plain spreadsheet, depending on how deep you go, so people use it for to-do lists, planning, requirement gathering and brainstorming in a single file. It is written by Wouter van Oortmerssen and released as free, open-source software under the zlib licence, with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux published on GitHub. The app is very small and light on memory, so it can stay open in the system tray all day. It works on local files with no account, cloud sync or collaboration, and there are no mobile apps. The interface is utilitarian and keyboard-heavy, and the nested-grid model takes some getting used to compared with a classic outliner, but it suits people who want structure that is more flexible than a spreadsheet and more compact than a mind map.

Best for: People who want a free, offline outliner-meets-spreadsheet for structuring complex personal notes.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Nested grids combine outlining, mind-mapping and table layouts in one document
  • Free and open source under the permissive zlib licence
  • Very small and fast, with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux

Why people leave

  • No cloud sync, sharing or real-time collaboration
  • No mobile apps
  • Dated, utilitarian interface with a learning curve for the nested model
